ALLIANCE RUPTURES: Working with rupture and repair processes in therapy
Breakdowns in the therapeutic relationship are an unavoidable aspect of therapy. Depending on how well therapists engage in repair processes, alliance ruptures can provide a vital opportunity for growth and therapeutic change.
Grounded in the ‘relational turn’ in psychotherapy, this workshop will explore the co-creation of alliance ruptures as a function of client, therapist and field characteristics. I will provide several templates through which to understand conceptions of the therapeutic alliance and rupture and repair processes from three areas: child development research, the relational-psychodynamic tradition and gestalt therapy. I will aim to provide tools to work with alliance ruptures as therapeutically as possible.
The workshop will provide various experiential moments including analysis of video; inquiry into attendees experiences of alliance ruptures (from the perspective of being both client and therapist); and an exploration of how therapeutic approach and & character style may inform alliance ruptures.
